Slow Food Nation

Yesterday, Alan O and I went to Slow Food Nation. What is slow food nation you ask? Well I'm glad you asked, I'll tell you. Slow Food Nation is a gathering here in San Francisco and possibly in other places as well that is designed to encourage and support organic and locally sustainable eating. Slow Food is a new movment--although eating locally grown foods is not new--that is being lead by people Alice Waters who was the head chef or owner of Chez Panisse restaurant in Berkeley. Now I'm sure someone who really understands all of this can explain it more. But I'm giving you my take. And essentially the event yesterday was a farmer's market/festival. But instead of festival food like funnel cakes they had organic fancy type fair foods. I had eaten before I went because I didn't know what kind of hippy food I might find at this event--you know like a gritty raw potato or quinoa. But I was delighted to find things that looked and tasted delicious. First of all the farmer's market was great and nearly every table had samples. It felt like Costco on the weekend. Then they had great sandwiches and such to buy--what got me was the ham biscuits that were being made by Scott Peacock who is the chef at Watershed in Atlanta, the restaurant owned by Emily Saliers from the Indigo Girls. Those biscuits were go-ood. They also had a set up an English garden behind city hall but all of the plants were food plants. It was really beautiful.

Now I expected to find all sorts of granola hippy types at event. And by that I mean arm hair sporting women wearing tank tops and flowing skirts. Dreadlocked hair. You know the whole she-bang. And to be sure I did see some, but not that many, mostly just your average San Franciscan farmer's market supporter. And some of those average San Franciscans were hot, hot!!!

The other thing about the event was the booth selling ghee, pronounced ge like he. Now I don't fully know what ghee is--it appeared to be butter. But it seems to come from butter so that means it cant be butter if it comes from butter right? It apparently is used a lot in Indian cooking. But none of that is my favorite thing about ghee. Instead, it was the of the way it is made. It said that the cows are milked in the traditional way only under a full or waxing moon in a peaceful mantra filled environment. A peaceful mantra filled environment?!?!? It was too much.

But all in all a fun day and I left with a belly full of goodness.

Support a local farm.

Peace out!

More randomness!!

Alright, so a few more random thoughts or sightings.

First, we are having a bit of beautiful weather here. Warm enough to go to the beach today. So that is what I did. And while I was there I saw an old naked man walking like a crab. I don't have an explanation for this. I can't tell you anymore than what I just told you. Just that.

But I also saw a pair of dolphins playing very close to the shore. And by playing, I mean swimming. Why is it that we, and by we I mean me, assume that every dolphin I see is playing? Those dolphins might have simply been going work at their little dolphin jobs. It might not have been playful at all, but that is my assumption. And I'm going to continue to believe that all of what a dolphin does is play because I want to believe that it is possible to be about all work and all of living in a playful way.

Second random thought, is that I have been watching the Democratic National Convention this week. I am a democrat and I'm somewhat proud of that fact. Only somewhat because like most people of my generation I am somewhat disillusioned with the whole political landscape--democrat and republican. But I will vote for Barrack Obama and will tell those that I know to do the same. All that being said, I think most of the speeches at the convention have been fairly uninspiring. In my opinion the only speeches that have been at all effective were Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton. I thought Joe Biden was good. But here is the thing I don't think it is just poor orators, instead I think it is some pretty poor speech writing. There are ways to write and speak that are persuasive and inspiring. We can all think of speeches that have left us feeling inspired and convinced. We can come up with phrases that have stuck with us over the course of history, i.e, think not of what your country can do for you but for what you can do for your country. I'm not sure we'll come away from this convention with anything like that. Although, I'm hopeful that Barrack Obama might tomorrow night.

But I will say again that I loved Hillary Clinton last night and Bill Clinton could sell a (insert appropriate folksy phrase but potentially politically incorrect here to suggest Bill Clinton's ability to convince one to do anything.)

Alright that is is. Naked crab walking man and unsolicited political speech writing critique. Enjoy!

Peace out!

Two unrelated random thoughts

(1) I'm at my coffee shop office--the place I come to work so that I actually might do some work. Normally, as I've shared before, I order a cup of Earl Grey. Well I've been finding that kind of bitter so today I decided to mix it up. I mean I've been coming here for weeks ordering the same exact thing and the people who work here still don't recognize me so its not like I'm going to throw them off. So anyway, I ordered Irish Breakfast. But I got to say I don't love it. I can't fully describe it. It doesn't taste like English Breakast tea. I wonder if it is made from real Irish. Because that could do it.

(2) The other thing is this. A while back I heard on Oprah from Julia Roberts and Julia Roberts' friend that I shouldn't use deodorant with aluminum in it. Even though I had heard about the dangers of chemicals in deodorants before it took Oprah and Julia Roberts to convince me. I had been using Mitchum unscented, but after I ran out last I bought a stick of Tom's of Maine. You know the all organic, blahdy, blahdy, blah. But here is the problem, I think that my pits stink now. So the only thing it is doing is keeping me from sweating. But here is the thing I don't know if I'm offensive to all people or just myself. And if I am, then is just like I'm European and that could be chic. Or do I just stink? Those of you who spent a lot of time with me last week let me know if you noticed a musky smell to me or if I'm the only one who notices. And those of you who have used these types of products let me know if you have a similar issue. And if so what have you done to combat the smelly pits.

See completely random and unrelated.

Peace out!

Right Now

So right now I'm sitting in Farley's, my favorite coffee shop. I'm trying to memorize my music for Aida. (There is a lot of music.) But the point of this post is not to tell you what I'm doing but instead to point out a couple of things I noticed on the way to Farley's and once I got here. First, on the way here I was following an old, small Toyota pick-up truck. It was loaded down with what I'm guessing is scrap metal, but said scrap metal included a car door and a water heater. I want you to picture what that must have looked like.

Second, when I arrived at Farley's, I was sitting at my table, where I'm sitting right now, and I had a perfect view of the counter. Well while I was watching the people order I noticed a young woman touching her breast. Now not just picking a piece of lint off her chest. No she lifted her hoodie revealing her t-shirt and then cupped her breast. She cupped her right breast! I have no idea what this woman was doing. But it looked odd.

Maybe more later!

Cheese steaks and lozenges

Yep, I know it has been a while since my last post. But I have seen many of you since my last post--that is my young clergy group, many of whom I know are regular readers. I was in Philadelphia. It was great to be there and I saw my college roommate who also lives in Philadelphia. It had probably been seven years of so since I last saw him and 10 since we last really talked. The man basically has 3 full time jobs. Not because he is single mom supporting 3 kids, living out of of their station wagon just to make ends meet. No instead he is just someone who has to do that much. This is the same person who finished a double major in 3 years. It is amazing that we lived together for all three of those years since I think when it comes to the motivation factor we might be complete opposites. I am not going to be working 3 jobs. Hell, I'm barely working one.
While in Philly I had a cheese steak, of course. It was delicious. Although, we did not go to Pat's or Gino's, the most famous of the cheese steakeries. For two reasons, one Gino's is apparently racist. It could be Pat's so don't hold me to the first libelous statement. The way I know that one or the other is racist is that apparently there is a sign that says you must order in English. Which pretty much means if you are going to come to this country, i.e. from Mexico, you better learn English. The other main reason was that we have some vegetarians in our group and it is hard to find a vegetarian option at Pat's or Gino's. And you know even if there was a vegetarian option it would be cooked on the same griddle as the meat option. So instead we went to the Reading Market that has many food options including Mike's Cheese Steaks. Apparently Philadelphia is not very creative when it comes to naming one's cheese steakery, Mike's, Gino's, Pat's. (Don't you love how I've created the word "steakery?")
I returned to SF on Tuesday. And I was really tired. So I've basically been recovering ever since. Plus I came back with this raspy, sore throat. The sore throat is the real point of this post. I woke up Friday morning about 3 AM with a sore throat. It was keeping me awake. So about 4 I went to the bathroom and rummaged around in the cabinet for a sore throat lozenge. I put one in my mouth and went back to bed, eventually falling asleep. I had a dream that I was having a meal. And the waitress came to the table and asked if I wanted dessert. I said no and then she brought me a tray of drinks. I didn't order the drinks. I guess they were complimentary. I don't really know--but I'm not going to pass up free drinks. And they were speciality drinks and she explained to me that I should drink one before the other. Well the problem I faced in my dream was that I had a sore throat lozenge in my mouth and I could have a drink with that in my mouth. So in my dream I decided I would spit it out onto the tray that the drinks were on. Suddenly I'm awake because I have an icky sticky lozenge stuck to my cheek. My fear was that I was going to get up in the morning and find a red stain on my pillow case. But fortunately it was just on my cheek. Mary Sue said that perhaps the dream was because I needed to get the lozenge out of my mouth--my thought that perhaps I was choking. Regardless, note to self be careful when you go to sleep with something in your mouth.
I've also been waking up recently with a really dry mouth. And I've been having issues with a raspy throat and phlegm for a while--maybe 6 weeks or so, possibly longer. And I think one of the issues is that i've started sleeping with my mouth open. I know this doesn't make any sense, but I don't think I've always slept with my mouth open, but last night I did have this feeling that I was mouth breathing rather than nose breathing. As I now have written that it sounds ridiculous. But at this point it is the best explanation I have. I should have stopped at the story of the sore throat lozenge.

Let me know if you have any other explanations.

Peace out!

Coffee Break

Alright, my friend Alan and I have taken up residence most afternoons during the week in a coffee shop near his house. The shop is called Farley's and I love it. It has a really good vibe. And it is much better than my office at the church. (Although my biggest complaint is that I've been coming here nearly ever day during the week for the last month or so, ordering the exact same thing--a cup of Earl Grey tea for here. And yet everyday they still look at me as if it my first time in the shop and the following dialogue happens:
Coffee Shop worker: "What can I get you"
Me: Cup of Earl Grey
Coffee Shop worker: "For here or to go"
Me: For here.
As if today everything is going to change.)

Anyway none of that is point of this post. The point is that Alan and I have taken to looking out the window and waiting for the guy who lives across the street to come home. He is cute but often he is also shirtless. I don't know when he takes off his shirt but usually it is off when he gets home. We get disappointed when he is wearing his shirt. It all reminds me of the old diet coke commercial where the women would gather at their office window every afternoon for a diet coke break which was really to watch the hot construction worker across the street without his shirt on drinking a diet coke. We have become those women who ogle a the hottie across the street. I'm embedding the commercial below. Thank you YouTube.

I leave tomorrow for Philly to be with my young clergy group. I'm very, very excited. Plus I get to see my college roommate who I haven't seen in probably about 10 years. All in all it should be a good time.

Peace out!

Opening Ceremony

Alright, if you didn't watch the Olympics opening ceremony last you night you missed a huge spectacle. It was fantastic. Now let's be clear it probably wasn't, in my opinion, as fantastic as Dolly Parton but it was awesome. (I'm guessing that everyone in the world would disagree with me about the Dolly Parton thing--well maybe a few other queens would agree with me.) I really was amazed at all that they did. Granted when you spend 300 million dollars it better be awesome.

But the thing that got me was the little boy who walked by the tall chinese basketball player who was the flag bearer for the Chinese team. This little boy was a survivor of the earthquake that happened in China recently. As you may remember lots of children were killed in that earthquake. It was the middle of the day and many of them were at school. Well this boy was at school but was able to escape. He then went back in and helped two of his friends get out of the wreckage. When asked why he did that, he said "it was my job. I'm a hall monitor." That is one of the most beautiful stories. It is this great reminder of human potential to do good. We aren't just perpetrators of act of violence. I hope for the day when we all have the responsibility of this little hall monitor.

Peace out!

Dolly

I cannot even begin to tell you how great the Dolly Parton concert was last night. She is incredible. At 62 she looks as good as she did 40 years ago. And she brought her a-game last night. She sang some of her best songs. Including 2 doors down, coat of many colors, and why'd you come in here looking like that. (I love the line"... with your cowboy boots and your painted on jeans, all dressed up like a cowgirl's dream...") We had excellent seats. I had a perfect view of her.
One unfortunate thing was that I could see the teleprompter that was running the lyrics for her during the songs. Now, first of all she did not appear to use them very much. Second she has a huge songbook so I don't expect her to remember every lyric perfectly to every song. But the problem was that I kept finding myself watching the lyrics scroll by instead of the concert. It is a problem that I have, if a TV is on whether I want to watch what is going on or not I cannot help but look at it. The teleprompter was no exception.
She did an hour and then took an intermission and came back and did another 45 minutes. At the end of the first hour when she said she was going to take a break, I couldn't believe it had only been one hour. She had already sung so much. It was so exciting to think about what she might sing when she came back.

She would have sung at least one song more, but because the venue is an outdoor amphitheater there was a 10 o'clock curfew. I read in a blog today that she had been singing "the grass is blue" while accompanying herself on the piano at her other shows. She took that one out. Which was unfortunate because I love that song. But she did "Little Sparrow" acapella and she sang the hell out of that song.

Seriously, I loved it. I couldn't wipe the silly grin off my face all night. She was so, so, so good!!!!! I saw her a few years ago and I think this might have been an even better concert.

She did not seemed to phased at all at her academy award loss a few years ago for "Travelin' Thru" from the movie Transamerica. Although she could be holding it all in--like I am. I mean it was the same year the Brokeback Mountain lost for best picture--that I could live with but Dolly losing to that "Hard Out Here for a Pimp" song was a travesty. I still haven't recovered. But apparently she is moving on. Maybe that is why she wrote the "Better Get to Livin'" song. She is moving on from the disappointment. And maybe I should too, but I'm just not ready.

Oh a few other things about the concert. A woman apparently took off her shirt and tried to give it to Dolly. That was weird. There were lots of people who had brought flowers. People were smoking pot. Now this isn't all that weird in Berkeley but I thought it was a bit weird at the Dolly Parton concert. But there were clearly a lot of people smoking because the smell was really strong. She even mentioned it when she came back after intermission. She said "I'm feeling really good now. Something is just in the air."

And finally I went with some pretty annoying folks. My friend Lee and his boyfriend Kurt and I went together but we met up with their friends Jay and Travis before the concert for dinner and then Jay drove us all to the show. It was very nice of Jay to drive us, so I feel a little bad to complain. But I'm going to. They are both going to be in some drag show this weekend. It is a long story--they are normally drag performers, but are performing this week. Travis is a former Mr. San Francisco Leather and Jay was his handler after the pageant for the National Pageant. (It would take too long to explain this to you and I think it is pretty ridiculous.) Anyway seriously all they talked about all night was their upcoming drag performance, what they were wearing, what they were performing, etc. etc. They are both doing 3 numbers plus they have an outfit for their arrival. You heard me right they have an arrival outfit. They are having a formal arrival. Oh and they wouldn't tell us what they were performing because they wanted it to be a surprise. Is the art of surprise really that important to drag? Honestly, I am not exaggerating when I say they talked about it almost the entire evening. And they kept dropping names that I'm guessing I was supposed to know. Ridiculous. Fortunately they did not sit next to us. Had I spent the whole night with them I someone would have ended up dead. I'm not sure which one of us, but one of us for sure.

Alright, enough. To recap: Dolly fantastic!!! Pseudo-Drag queens annoying!!

National Underwear Day

Did you know that today is a national holiday--it's national underwear day. I know ridiculous right. But maybe next year instead of sending out Christmas cards I'll send NUD cards.

But to that end, I thought I'd share that today I'm wearing Black Calvin Klein trunks--it's in between a brief and a boxer brief. So they don't ride up like boxer briefs. What about you? What are you wearing to celebrate this day?

I have to say I tend to celebrate everyday.

Only 8 more hours until Dolly.

The Closer

Seriously, ya'll this show is good. I only started watching it last week--been on for a couple of years. But I am a fan.

Ch-ch-ch-changes

So a lot has been changing in my life. And not just the big stuff. I mean little stuff too. Here is what I have noticed

(1) The produce market near my house has undergone a renovation. I love this market. Lots of fresh produce but I can also do just about all of my grocery shopping there as well. Well up until recently it was not the nicest place in the world. However, I never really noticed because it wasn't filthy or gross, it was just a little run down. They have recently done a bit of renovation--a little at a time. First I noticed that they had replaced the laminate on the check-out counter. before it had peeled away in places. Now the counters are completely recovered. Then I walked in one day and noticed they had put down new parquet wood flooring. Now I'm not sure what this looked like before--it's possible it could have just been bare concrete. Then when I went in this weekend I noticed that they had either added more light or just replaced all the bulbs. Regardless now it is really bright and well lit. Not that it was too terribly dark before, but now it is really bright. Now I love it even more.

(2) Facebook has changed. Although, I'm not quite sure how the new facebook is much better than the other.

(3) Scrabulous is gone on facebook. You probably read about this in the newspaper or on-line. Copyright infringement, blah, blah, blah. So the new option was wordscraper created by the people who did scrabulous and Scrabble beta created by the people who own the scrabble copyright in the US and Canada. I don't like wordscraper. I like Scrabble beta alright but it seems a little graphics heavy.

(4) The economic crisis has finally affected me. And by that mean the cost of my super baby burrito at my local taqueria has gone up in price. Before it was $4.88 and now it is $5...something. (I haven't gotten the new price memorized yet, but give me time.) That price had been the same for five years.

(5) The hole in the big toe of my blue striped socks has gotten bigger.

Ehh. So none of these are big changes they are just changes. I'm wondering if I'm noticing them more befcause of the big change that happened this year.

Peace out!

A lot of nothing

Well I don't really have anything to write today, but I thought I just give you a bit of stuff

(1) I have now had four rehearsals for Aida. I can't remember if I wrote about this or not. But I'm going to be singing in the San Francisco Lyric Opera's production of Aida. I'm in the priests chorus. Don't you think it is a bit of type-casting? I'm enjoying it. But it is pretty hard. There is a lot of music to memorize. More than I've ever had to memorize. There are also some cuties in the cast. I'm pretty sure a few I will see without their shirts on. It is set in Egypt after all. I'll let you know how it progresses.

(2) Currently I'm stuffing figs and drinking a Strongbow Cider. Many of you know that my drink, specifically my bottled drink of choice is a nice dry cider. Well up until last weekend I hadn't been able to find a nice cider in San Francisco--only the pear cider and the woodpecker apple cider which are a little too sweet for me. When I was in Scotland I had my absolute favorite cider, Scrumpy Jack. It is de-e-licious. In the United States most place I could find an import called Strongbow that I really like. But not in San Francisco. And by San Francisco, I mean the BevMo, superstore, in Daly City. But last weekend I was at another BevMo here in the city and I found it . I immediately bought a six pack. I'm drinking one right now. Yay! I'm also stuffing figs to take to a friends house tonight to watch the movie version of Hello Dolly. I know how gay is that? The answer: pretty gay! But that will get me ready for Tuesday night. What you might ask is going on Tuesday night? Well I'm glad you asked. I'm going to see Dolly Parton in concert. Where I will say Hello Dolly. I am so excited I could just about pee myself. WooHoo. I'm sure I'll tell you all about it.

Well back to stuffing figs. I'll take a picture and post them with this post.

Peace out!
