I'm really thinking my blog should just be titled something about food, because I write about food a lot. I love food.
I had friends over tonight for dinner, as I mentioned in yesterday's post. So I thought I'd let you know what was on the menu:
Caprese Salad with Heirloom Tomatoes (I'm not sure you get heirlooms in places other than CA. They are awesome.)
Roasted vegetables: sweet onion, zuchini, asparagus, and sweet potatoes
Risotto with black mission figs and prosciutto. (Again Black Mission Figs are a CA thing. D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S!!!)
A fresh loaf of Italian bread
For Dessert Pound Cake with a lemon sauce and fresh whipped cream (I was going to make gingerbread but you can't find gingerbread cake mix in the stores in the Summer. Clearly a fall thing.)
The pound cake was store bought. One of the folks here tonight said "I made it possible." Now normally I would bake. I enjoy baking, but I just didn't have it in me today and I didn't want to get the house all heated up before people came over. (Although, the vegetables still took longer than I expected because of the sweet potatoes. So the house was still hot.) But I was goign to bake a ginger bread cake but from a mix, but see above for reason that didn't happen. After going to a bakery, and two grocery stores I finally settled for the store bought pound cake. And it was fine, but I've made better. Anyway the lemon sauce I made and I whipped the cream. But here is the funny story. So I was chatting with my friend Copey last night about the menu, and he mentioned the lemon sauce and the gingerbread cake. I asked him for the recipe for the sauce and he gave it to me. On the e-mail which was from one of those recipe programs where you enter your recipes into the form and then you have them stored on your computer. They are nice but I don't have one. The source for the recipe was his mother. It called for corn starch. So I took down my box of corn starch--it was old so I ended up buying a new box. I looked at the back of the box and there was that recipe for the lemon sauce. So I hate inform Copey but his mother didn't come up with that recipe nor is it an old family recipe. Now for all I know his mother isn't passing it off as her own nor does he believe she developed the recipe, but I still thought it was funny.
Alright, well I'm off for now. It has been a long day.
Oh, also, I think my tv is broken. Big dilemma. I'll blog about that tomorrow.
Nighty, night.

Here's my absolutely favorite pound cake recipe:
Cream 1/4 lb butter and 1/2 cup vegetable shortening until creamy. Add 1 2/3 cups sugar and 1/23 tsp salt and beat well.
Add 5 eggs, one at a time, beating very thoroughly after each addition. Stir in 1 1/2 tsp almond extract ad 1 1/2 tsp vanilla.
Add 2 cups sifted cake flour gradually.
Grease a 5 x 9 loaf pan.
Pour in batter and bake in preheated 325 degree oven for 1.5 hours or until straw carefully inserted into center comes out clean.
Where are you Brian? I misshyou...:-(
